Flooding And Insurance: What To Do

We started getting calls and emails from people who have suffered flood damage from heavy rains this weekend. Here are some tips on what you can do if you try to clean:

Paper-loss. Take pictures, notes, videos, etc.

Contact your insurer as soon as possible. Be aware that standard homeowners coverage does not cover flood damage. But you can have coverage against floods, without knowing it - in floodplains, it is often necessary to obtain a mortgage.

-Limiting the damage as best I can. Get the furniture and belongings out of the water if possible. Shovel or squeegee mud and water. Home drying things.

-Create a written record. If you rent a pump to keep receipts. If your system is damaged and needs to move temporarily into a motel, with the exception of those received.

-If possible, avoid throwing damaged items. The expert may want to see them.

In addition, standard flood coverage does not cover basement improvements generally, such as finished walls or floors, furniture or personal belongings in a basement. It does, however, essential equipment, such as your furnace and water heater.
