A new global study of more than 2,500 Chief Information Officers (CIOs), released by IBM on September 10, 2009, reveals that leveraging analytics to gain a competitive advantage and improve business decision-making is now the top priority for CIOs.
83% of attending CIOs plan to improve their business intelligence and analytics solutions to enhance their business competitiveness. The main reason for this is the ability to better see patterns in their huge amount of data stored in ERP and other data bases.
The Global CIO Study 2009 reveals the results and other insights of this survey which is by the way the largest face-to-face survey of CIOs ever conducted.
The result of the survey clearly show the increasingly strategic role that CIOs are playing as IT leaders and drivers of innovation and financial growth. As CIOs from 78 different countries and 19 industries attended, this survey really represents the true global aspect of the influence of CIOs and their priorities. The study is titled"The New Voice of the CIO"
CIOs want to provide tools to help improve decision-making at all levels of their corporation said Pat Toole, CIO of IBM. They understand that only better analytics and business intelligence broadly used in their company can be the key to explore new growth markets.
71% of the attending CIOs of the survey plan to make additional investments in areas like risk management and corporate compliance. However, their top priority for the next 12 months is data analytics.
CIOs are challenged in a tough economy as we experience since end of 2008 to provide excellent information as fast as possible to managers at all levels of their corporation to improve their decision-making.
Gaining competitive advantage in existing and new markets is key to all companies in this economy. CIOs are therefore forced to manage and leverage new intelligence through analytics.
