Tips On Installing A Vent In Your Roof

By Scott Rodgers

Home ventilation is quintessential in rendering a sound setup to your home. To ensure that the attic is ventilated properly, a vent needs to be installed in your roof. The vent would allow an easy passage for the escape of the air which in turn would prevent your home from problems of leaks and molds.

To restore the normality of your roof and home, a vent needs to be inculcated in the scheme of the things. The vent in the roof would prevent the home from attaining an airtight setting.

Instead of bringing in the services of a professional contractor straightaway, take the task in your own hands. Beforehand, amass all the required tools and supplies that would help you a lot in the course of action. The regular repair tools such as hammer, circular saw, pry bar tool, pliers etc. are essential enough to get a place in the planning stage. In addition, a fixed amount of roofing cement needs to be purchased as well.

Climb up the roof and observe the area to locate a place where the vent should be installed. An expert can provide you some healthy suggestion regarding that. Once the zone is determined, employ your pry bar tool to partially uproot the shingles lying adjacent to the decided location. Don't force the issue on the shingles as some of them may be needed later to envelop the vent.

Once a ridge cap is rendered, mark down an area around the ridge such that 7 or 8 inches are left on either side of the ridge. Use a piece of bright chalk to tag the roof surface.

Make way for a circular saw and start cutting the shingles from the markings made. Pry up the remains of the shingles with the help of the pry bar tool. Set the sharpness of the blade to a moderate level such that the rafters don't suffer any damage during the operation.

Walk down to a local hardware store and purchase a new vent. It is likely that the salesperson would recommend a baffled vent to you. This is because a baffled vent is more efficient than the other types of vents. It prevents air from entering into the attic and at the same time, allows the hot air to escape out to the surroundings. Place the selected vent in position and nail it down. Envelop the vent with the shingles and apply some roofing cement on the setup to rigidify it.

Keep all the safety precautions in tact during the life of the project.
